1814 Overture was inspired by the burning of the public buildings in Washington by the British in 1814, during the War of 1812. Based on a period painting by George Munger, this detail is a fairly accurate representation of how the White House actually looked after the fire— a roofless shell with only chimneys standing, its interior gutted.
