Too often they weren’t the forthright, fun-loving types one might expect, but reserved and odd— not interesting odd but odd in a distressing way. On lonely Saturday nights I sometimes toured the park on foot and neither saw the cars nor heard the laughs of a single party— not to crash (I was too shy) but just to enjoy vicariously in my solitude.
