This painting was inspired by two historical incidents that, while related, occurred 140 years apart. The first was in 1843, the unearthing of six corroded brass tablets— along with some bones— from an indian mound located near the town of Kinderhook, Illinois. The second was the appearance, around 1983, of the so-called Salamander Letter.
