The Salamander Letter was also a hoax conceived to discredit the foundations of Mormon faith, but it had another purpose— to make money for its creator, the forger Mark Hofmann. His plan, which he carried out, was to convince Mormon leaders that the embarrassing document was genuine, so they would feel compelled to buy it and lock it away in a vault.
