The Kinderhook Plates were an attempt by anti-Mormons to discredit the founder of that faith, Joseph Smith. The plan was to fake a set of metal plates and pretend to discover them. They would then be brought to the attention of the Prophet with the idea that he might try to translate them in such a way as to lend credence to the Book of Mormon.
