It was in the office of the old speaker plant that I heard the black-ear joke described, though it was never actually tried there. A fellow draftsman explained it— first you select a suitable victim to be the recipient of the ear. The only requirement was that he had to have a black telephone. At that time there were still plenty of black office phones.
