The most obvious explanation for the microphone joke is that the mike’s generally placed much closer to us (particularly our mouths) than the camera. But there’s another possible reason— the suggestibility of successful humor. Many microphones, unlike cameras or camera lenses, are more or less phallic in shape as well as size and angle of placement.
