Second to the Rankin cabin, the most interesting residence on High Street was perhaps the Edward West house in the adjoining block. Lexington’s first watchmaker, he was also an early inventer who launched the first steamboat on western waters in 1793 and invented the nail-cutting machine. When his house was torn down I preserved one of its nails.
