At Old Bethel we had to learn the books of the Bible, and every other hymn was “The Old Rugged Cross.” Tiny Sunday School rooms had windup phonographs that wheezed to a halt in the middle of a tune. Pianos were cranky uprights on which someone was continually trying to hammer out “Chopsticks.” I liked art projects— tracing, coloring, and pasting.
