This was inspired by an early childhood memory. We were trying a shortcut— possibly during one of our trips from Indianapolis to Muskegon to visit Grandpa and Grandma Slutz— and found ourselves facing increasingly steeper hills on gravel roads in our uncertain old Ford. I made many changes, including paving the highway and adding a town.
