Instead of large rest areas the old two-lanes had roadside tables— gravel pull-offs next to one or two picnic tables. We used them for meals on the road. One time we were stuck behind a truck with a double trailer, the rear trailer swaying dangerously. We finally got around, but then during our lunch stop it passed frighteningly close. Dad called the police.
