This painting was begun on 9/11. While I’d had the idea in mind for quite a while, it was an appropriate work to begin on that day. One point of reference was the oil region in Southern Illinois, particularly the Wabash plain south of Mt. Carmel, which I transverse each way a couple times a year, driving to and from Indianapolis.
