Powered by continual thermal venting in the liquefaction beneath, massive stone towers sway and rotate, almost toppling— at the last instant twist back on axis; near-steady rumblings and grindings against a backdrop of wind, thunder, and eruption punctuated by ear-splitting bursts of steam and sulfuric gases; bells hurl like doomed seamen.

Detail of an apocalyptic vision, here focusing on the tops of a few of the leaning towers.
