Whereas the ground around the crash site— and for that matter throughout the painting— is my usual tamped gray grit, the pod is slick yet opaque. However the ruby-colored crystals in the memorial circle are at once glossy and highly translucent. This jewel-like quality against the dark, absorbant ground can be hard to do justice to in reproduction.
