Ryder’s painting Racetrack is said to have been inspired by a real life incident involving a suicide following a betting fiasco. Here my impetus was simply the universal allure of gambling meccas, after a modest lucky streak in Reno. Winning is depicted by a lovely young woman; losing by the grim reaper of a stickman, with his stick for a scythe.

In a ruined, roofless structure a game of craps-- for life or for death-- is in progress
